Successful Cabaret Night Calls for Encore
By Louise Seeholzer
The Westlake-Westshore Arts Council and Clague Playhouse hit a grand slam homerun on March 3, 2012, without using a ball and bat. A Cabaret Night, the fundraising event co-sponsored by these groups, had the aura of success from beginning to end.
Over 200 guests gathered at Wagner’s County Inn generating a positive energy that continued to build during the evening filled with socialization, tempting auction items, good food and fine entertainment. The sellout crowd was welcomed by WWAC president Marge Widmar and Clague Playhouse president Lillian Boehmer, who expressed gratitude for the wonderful support for the arts that the overflow audience represented.
Master of Ceremonies Greg Violand and his wife Maryann Nagel co-produced the entertainment, which followed the dinner. Violand and Nagel began the show with a George Burns and Gracie Allen routine that had an audience of all ages laughing.
In addition to Violand and Nagel, gifted vocalists Tina D. Stump, Dyan Beder, Darryl Lewis and Paul Floriano performed well-chosen songs from a variety of musicals. They were accompanied by keyboardist Tom Bonezzi. The talented entertainers provided ample reason for applause, which the audience generously provided.
Audience and entertainers gave a warm welcome to TV personality, journalist and author Dick Feagler. He delighted all by reading his column describing a typical hot summer day when he was a boy, before air conditioning and plastic pools were common place. This wordsmith extraordinaire paints pictures with words and takes his listeners right into the scene.
The success of this initial collaboration between WWAC and Clague Playhouse was clearly heard from many voices remarking that the event should be repeated next year. A Cabaret Night may turn out to be a happy beginning.
